Castle of Kanina and Borsh

Tourism Development, Site management, Visitor Experience, Design and Supervision

The Castle of Borsh represents an ancient fortification situated on top of a rocky hill. It is a medieval castle and from its construction dating back to the middle of the IV-th century BC, went into different historical construction phases, more precisely six phases.

The Castle of Kanina also represents a very important historical and cultural asset, that went through many historical construction phases from the first starting phase of an Illyrian fortress, to a second phase dating back to the 5-6th century AD and going to some other phases, seven in total.

The project, within its limited budget, aims the implementation of a conservation plan, focusing on the most important and urgent conservation interventions on specific areas of the Castles. Easy access and safeguarding the visitor’s experience in these castles, has been another priority in the project and also the interpretation plan with a rich system of didactic, information panels highlighting the historical, architectural and cultural values of these important assets.

Specific spaces were proposed to facilitate and improve the visitor’s experience, spaces that currently are missing, such as ticket offices and info points, toilets or recreational spaces such as an amphitheater in the case of Kanina. A very important part has been the proposal of an intuitive management plan for these castles with the intent to make these sites self- sufficient for the future and at the same time tackling important issues related to the geology and their overall stability.
